Karen Miller Events

Karen Miller will have a solo exhibit at the Latimer Quilt and Textile Center March 6-May 6. The title of the show is "My Favorite Things". Opening reception is March 11 noon to 4.

Karen will be teaching katazome in Yachats April 18-19 and at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, at Cascade Head in September. Details are available on Karen's website.

Karen is one of the featured artists in the new Art Quilt Portfolio: The Natural World, edited by Martha Sielman for Lark Books. The book is scheduled for release April 2, 2012.

Karen has also been selected to teach at the Abruzzo School of Creative Arts in September 2013. She will teach be teaching katazome, but with an Italian twist.

Portland Area Meeting on January 18

SAQA Meeting reminder.

The SAQA Portland area group met in Lake Oswego on December 14. As a focus for some followup meetings, participants were asked to select a SAQA show that they planned to enter in a year or so. We will meet in smaller groups and share our progress in the interim.

There will be a follow-up organizing meeting at Gerrie Congdon's home on January 18, from 10am to noon. Bring a sack lunch if you like. Those attending the meeting can RSVP and get directions from Gerrie at her email, gericon@comcast.net. The focus of the meeting will be discussing upcoming calls for entry from the SAQA website and examining the prospectuses that interest group members. Bring printed copies of any prospectus that interests you. If you find information of interest on the SAQA website, bring references to share. Two SAQA Oregon members are award winners at Quilts = Art = Quilts, at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, New York. Catherine Beard was awarded the Schweinfurth Award for Design Excellence for her quilt, Inner Space. Bonnie Bucknam received a Juror's Choice Award for her quilt, Coastlines. The exhibit is on view at the Schweinfurth through January 12, 2012.

Sitka Art Invitational at World Forestry Center November 4 - 6

Jean Wells Keenan has been working on a collabrative project with Patty Bently, an oil painter from Portland, Oregon.

The art above, called "Santiam Pass," is a a set of five separate panels. Pieces 1,3,and 5 are paintings by Patty, while pieces 2 and 4 are quilts made by Jean. The art will be on display at the 2011 Sitka Art Invitational Show to be held November 4, 5 & 6 at the World Forestry Center in Portland, Oregon.

The two artists came up with the idea of commemorating the 2003 B&B Complex Fire along the Santiam Pass. A simple sketch of the landscape and selecting a color palette were the starting points. Jean first pieced the land in panels 2 and 4, then sent the work to Patty, who did the preliminary paintings on panels 1, 3 and 5.

After the base work was complete, Jean and Patty met again to plan the placement of the tree snags and the details to be added to all five panels, that would unite the panels into one flowing work.

Jean added the tree snags, quilted her pieces, finished them with art facings and returned the panels to Patty. Patty finished the paintings and took the peices to a framer. The quilts hang free from the top and the paintings are stretched over frames that are about 3/4" in width. A dimensional feeling is created when you look at the piece.

Hello Oregon SAQA Members

This is our first communication as the new representatives. Let us introduce ourselves: Betty Daggett, from Portland, is a long time quilter who began making art quilts four years ago. Photography inspires much of her work as the camera's lens gives her a new perspective for viewing the world. Betty has been involved with several quilt groups in her community over the past fifteen years. She is an active member in Columbia Fiber Arts Guild in Portland and was the Membership Chairperson for that organization for two years. Taking classes has expanded her techniques to create quilts with many layers. Jean Wells Keenan of Sisters is well known in the quilting community for being the founder of the Outdoor Quilt Show and as co-owner of The Stitchin' Post for 36 years. She has written 38 books on quilting, traveled the country and internationally teaching quilting as well as lecturing on business in the industry. Quilting has always been her passion and her interest in art quilting began about eight years ago. Nature is her inspiration for color as well as imagery.

We both are looking forward to our term as your representatives. Our goals are to help personalize SAQA to the members and extend the learning environment and participation in show entries. Parlor meetings seem to be a good way of gathering together like-minded people to further develop the members as art quilters. The Eugene area and Central Oregon have established meetings. Some help is needed in the Portland area and rest of the state to form similar parlor groups to increase individual participation and growth as art quilters in the state.

We are both in the process of digesting the web site and want to have a one-day state conference in the fall of 2012 in the Portland area.

We want you to know how much we have enjoyed being the SAQA reps for Oregon. We have gained much from the SAQA conferences but even more from being in our home state and working with you. We started with little and have seen a wonderful network develop. It will only get better as more and more of us participate to further the goals of SAQA here.

In our meetings with your incoming reps, Betty Daggett and Jean Wells Keenan, we've learned that they have some great stuff coming for you, too, but it's their turn to start waving the SAQA banner here in Oregon. Going forward, Trisha Hassler is committed to exploring each of these aspects in her work at a more purposeful level. This is the result of some personal experience and growth that is working it's way into her textile pieces. It's very exciting for her and she loves to talk about it, so please come out and ask her questions!

In August, Trisha will be showing a variety of wall pieces at Visage Eyewear in NW Portland. Visage is in the business of helping clients improve their vision, to see the world through a new set of "eyes", and one of the first things clients will be viewing is her artwork. Lately she is seeing the world differently too, so it's all about "vision" at the moment.

The detail above is from "Surrender To The Possibility Of A Complete Unraveling". It is from her newest Internal Landscape series. Her sense of pace has shifted to a new focus on hand-stitching, and she finds the time spent doing it to be quite wonderful!

Looks like Bonnie Bucknam will be going to Rio! Three of her quilts were recently in the Rio Patchwork Design show, which was held in early July in both Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Bonnie's quilt Fracture won the Viewer's Choice award. The prize - a trip to Rio for next year's show!

SAQA Oregon Exhibit in Sisters

I made the trip to Sisters, Oregon for the annual Outdoor Quilt Show. I'd never been before, so it was a treat to see all the quilts hung about town. The weather was a balmy, breezy 80 degrees, unusually cool I was told. The SAQA Oregon exhibit, Oregon: State of Diversity, was on display at the Sisters Public Library. There was also an outdoor show of Jean Wells Keenan's work at the Five Pine Lodge that day. So I was lucky enough to see those two shows on Sunday. During the month of July, the Oregon History Museum will showcase a stunning selection of art quilts made by local and international artists. The exhibit began with booking Quilt Art 20, an exhibit featuring quilts created by 20 professional international quilt artists. Since its beginning in Britain in 1985, the traveling exhibit features artists from the United States and Europe, representing eight countries in total. To insert a local element to the exhibit, a selection of historic quilts from the Oregon Historical Society’s collection were added to the exhibit, as well as quilt art from 10 contemporary quilters in Oregon. Quilt Art 20 became Timeless Quilts.

Oregon Artists include: Ann Johnston, Hilde Morin, Jean Wells, Jeannette Meyer, Susan Bucharest, Quinn Corum, Wendy Huhn, Marjorie Post, Kathie Kerler and Helene Knott.

Bonnie Bucknam Awarded Best of Show at Quilt National 2011

Bonnie Bucknam's quilt Crater was named Best of Show at the May 27th opening of Quilt National 2011 in Athens, Ohio. The exhibition is at the Dairy Barn Arts Center through September 5, 2011. It will then tour the country for approximately two years. You can see some photos of the installation at the Dairy Barn's Facebook page. Biblical Origins of Racism by Betty Colburn

Betty Colburn's Biblical Origins of Racism is included in the exhibit, "The Unspoken Truth About Color: A Dialogue in Art Quilts About Racism." The exhibit opened April 29, 2011 at the ARC Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, and will continue through May 22, 2011. "The Unspoken Truth" examines one of the most complex and seldom discussed issues in our culture today: racism. In this exhibit, members of Fiber Artist for Hope have created pieces based on their personal experiences. This exhibit will travel with the Mancuso quilt shows this year.

Obama Drafted for NBA by Betty Colburn

Betty's quilt Obama Drafted for NBA is included in Carolyn Mazloomi's exhibition and book "Journey of Hope: Quilts Inspired by President Barack Obama". The exhibit opened on May 5, 2011 at the Du Sable Museum of African American History, Chicago, Illinois. The exhibit was previously shown in Ohio and will travel to Atlanta and Boston.

Oregon: State of Diversity Finishes Successful Run at Heritage Station Museum in Pendleton

SAQA member and volunteer Nancy Kibbey was kind enough to deliver and pick up our exhibit in Pendleton, where it had a highly successful run at the Heritage Station Museum. Nancy gave a presentation about art quilts on the last day of the run. After she returned home, she sent us the following information, which she has agreed we might share with you all.

"I was impressed by the efficiency of the staff and volunteers who took the show down. Several people matched quilt bags to the hanging pieces so the bag and the quilt went together to the tables where others were rolling them up and "packaging" them. I heard remarks from the volunteers about how helpful the pictures on the outside of the bags were. Usually when I'm involved with the take-down of a show, the volunteers are quilters, but that wasn't the case here, and I could see the process through new eyes. I have a couple of suggestions that will make our shows in the future more "professional:"

Bags of one color - white or off-white muslin. No prints, and NO plastic bags; see-through or opaque. A plastic zip-lock bag can be sewn to the outside of the bag (not where it will be scrunched when the bag is cinched shut) with a picture of the quilt on it.

Bags should match the size of the rolled up quilt, completely covering its full length. Not too wide; not too tight --- just right!

Velcro or ties to secure the top of the bag, but NO long dangling ties or long dangling tags.

The name of the quilter PROMINENTLY displayed on the bag, where it will not be obscured when the bag is cinched shut. The name of the quilt PROMINENTLY displayed on the hanging rod, the roll (pool noodles are good), on any "extra" parts that accompany the quilt. If you tie the quilt inside the bag, mark the ties, too. (Better yet; make a bag that fits properly, and you don't have to tie the quilt.)"

Laura and I want to thank Nancy for taking the time to write this up. We would like to add that your quilt bag is probably not the best place for you to express your creativity. Please keep in mind the purpose of the bag and those volunteers (quilters or not) who put in the time putting up and taking down our exhibits. I have used prints for bags; Nancy pointed out to me that it makes it that much harder to see the photo. I have learned from this; thanks, Nancy. We WELCOME your comments.......

Sandra Sider Critiques

On April 17th-18th the President of SAQA, Dr. Sandra Sider, held three critique sessions in Portland. Each participant (28 total, as some had to cancel) brought one piece; unfinished or not, to be critiqued and analyzed. Throughout the sessions, Sandra stressed the elements of art and design when working on our art quilts. She gave everyone a handout and told us to consciously count how many elements were well-represented in our work. This was eye-opening. She began each critique by hearing what the artist had in mind and/or hoped to accomplish with the work. She then pointed out the successful elements of the piece, and then opened a dialogue with the artist: what part was their favorite? where had they had the most trouble? what was their biggest question about the piece? and so on. She pointed out what she felt might have been handled differently to strengthen the piece, often referring back to those basic art and design principles to reinforce her comments. Finally, she opened the discussion to the group as a whole, and everyone had a chance to comment on the piece. We heard nothing but positive comments after each session, and many said they learned just by watching the critique of other pieces. Some of the changes suggested for the works were truly jaw-dropping in their effectiveness.

The good news is that Sandra wants to return to hold more sessions in the fall of 2012, and we will work with incoming reps Jean Wells Keenan and Betty Daggett to make that happen. We hope that those who were unable to participate this time will have the chance to do so next year, and we're also pretty certain that some people will sign up to repeat their positive experience.

Our thanks to Sandra, to SAQA member Gerrie Congdon who graciously hosted her, and to Geri Grasvik, owner of The Pine Needle in Lake Oswego, for hosting the sessions. And to all who brought their work and put it up at the front of the room!

Portland's Gathering of the Guilds April 29 - May 1

Portland's annual Gathering of the Guilds is this coming weekend at the Portland Convention Center. It's one of the biggest craft sales you'll see. Represented are pottery, woodworking, beading and jewelry, sculpture and metalarts, glass, and handweaving. This year Columbia FiberArts Guild will have a booth in the handweaving section. Several SAQA Oregon members will be represented in the CFG booth, #909 right between the handweavers and the woodworkers. Stop by and say hi. The show hours are

Update on Portland Area Meetings

On Wednesday, March 9, 2010, the fifth SAQA Oregon Portland area meeting was held at the Lakewood Center, Lake Oswego following the Columbia Fiberarts Guild meeting. There were 22 people present.

Georgia and Laura shared with the group that Jean Wells Keenan of Sisters and Betty Davis-Daggett of Portland will become the new SAQA Oregon co-representatives. They will begin training for this task immediately and phase into their new roles over the next several months.

Georgia and Laura also announced there will be an "Oregon, State of Diversity 2012" exhibit. Georgia and Laura have volunteered to chair that project.

The group decided to survey the membership of SAQA Oregon to obtain information about what members want from having an active chapter in Oregon. Betty Colburn and Sue Karstad volunteered to create and disseminate an online survey using. When the survey arrives in your email, please take a few minutes to respond.

Because the June 8,2011 Columbia Fiberart Guild meeting will be in the evening, the group decided to hold a dinner meeting at a restaurant before the CFG meeting. OREGON: STATE OF DIVERSITY II will travel throughout the state during 2012 and 2013. We have had a wonderful response to our first exhibit (which is still traveling) and we expect that will translate to more viewers and more venues for this one. Start planning your entry now. We encourage you to interpret the theme in any way you wish -- literally, figuratively, abstractly --- show us the diversity of Oregon SAQA member artists.

The SAQA Oregon Portland area quarterly meeting will be Wednesday, March 9th, 1:30 pm at the Lakewood Center for the Arts (368 State Street, Lake Oswego). All members and those interested in joining SAQA are encouraged to attend.

We will have sharing of in progress or newly finished work and continue to discuss avenues for having our work exhibited individually and as a group.

Because Columbia FiberArts Guild will have an evening meeting on June 9, we need to discuss the time and venue for our June 8 meeting.

Kathie Kerler work, "Split Infinity" has been juried into the SAQA exhibition Volusia--Wrapped in Fiber at the Gateway Center for the Arts in DeBary, Florida from February 15 to April 3, 2011.

She has a second piece entitled "Point Loma--San Diego" in an invitational themed show called the Lighthouse Art Quilts 2011. The show will travel to a variety of venues in California through the upcoming year as a fundraising benefit for lighthouse restoration for Point Pinos Lighthouse and Point Sur Lightstation. SCRAP Creative Reuse Center is pleased to announce a group fibers exhibition to be held July through August 2011 at Re:Vision Gallery. The fibers show, encompassing fibers as defined by the artist, will offer a survey of the plethora and diversity of contemporary (re-use) fiber arts in the Pacific Northwest. The Umpqua Valley Arts Center in Roseburg has published a call to all Oregon artists for a juried exhibit entitled "SYMBOLS, LETTERS, WORDS ------- TEXT US!" Artists are challenged to create a work of art in which some element of written or symbolic language or text is an integral visual part of the composition. Actual meaning may be superfluous --- or it may be vital --- but it's the visual aspect that will be considered most important. Think of text as mark-making. The juror is John Olbrantz, Director of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Wilamette University in Salem. Submissions are due by August 10th, 2011. UPDATE ON SAQA OREGON PORTLAND MEETING

The fourth SAQA Oregon Portland area meeting was held on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at Lakewood Center, Lake Oswego from 1:30pm until 3:00pm. Seventeen members and three visitors attended.

Discussion centered on what members want to gain from the group meetings and how to structure the group to achieve members’ goals. Finding opportunity for high quality exhibition of members’ artwork is a major goal. Other goals include sharing, networking, supporting each other, critique, and the promotion of quilts as art.

The SAQA National Board is working on a five-year plan for the organization. Members were encouraged to fill out the online survey.

We discussed the potential for having a statewide meeting in February in conjunction with the opening of the Pendleton exhibit of “Oregon: State of Diversity.”

We would like our blog to include posts regarding local opportunities for exhibiting. Please send information for local shows to Bonnie Bucknam. Regional and national exhibition calls are available from a number of magazines and websites. Bonnie will add some website links to the blog. [See the listing to the bottom right.]

Georgia and Laura shared the process of mounting a SAQA sanctioned exhibit. We can also have other exhibits open to statewide SAQA members but not officially sanctioned. We discussed forming a committee for each proposed exhibit so the Regional reps will not carry as much of the workload. There was discussion of the possibility of creating a “branded theme” SAQA Oregon exhibit.

Sandra Sider may be coming to Portland (date TBD) in 2011 for several group critique sessions. The sessions will be open to SAQA members but could also include other groups. More information will follow as we coordinate things with Sandra. There will be a nominal charge to cover Dr. Sider's travel expenses.

We decided to continue meeting quarterly in the early afternoon of the day of the Columbia Fiber Arts Guild quarterly meetings. The next meeting will be on March 9, 2011 at 1:30pm at Lakewood Center.

Here's one of my new limited edition series of small works created especially for the holiday show at Waterstone Gallery. Our theme at the gallery this year is "Conversations". The preview last night was a great success, and we'll be open for First Thursday tonight 6 - 9 pm. The work is an exciting collection of many different media. Since childhood, Trisha Hassler has stitched, cut and reassembled everything that would hold still: baby quilts, pillows, costumes, clothing and even a sofa. After many traditional quilts, she became fascinated with construction techniques, improvisational quilting and incorporating alternative materials into her fiber pieces. The evolution of Trisha's fiber work continued through experimentation and studying metal working with a sculptor friend.

Over the years there have been special pieces she has not been able to part with. This exhibit includes these pieces as well as her new work.

Many of the materials she now incorporates are recycled or reclaimed, adding texture and history to her work. Since 2000 Trisha's work has been exhibited in juried shows, galleries and museums around the world.

Here is an update on Shirley MacGregor's activities and exhibitions:

Time is flying and I am getting ready to travel to Argentina where I will be teaching classes. This has been a very busy summer, so I thought I would let you know what has been going on in my art quilt world.

The INTERNATIONAL WOMENS ARTISTS EXHIBITION USA - AUGUST 2010 at the Littman Gallery – Portland State University – Portland OR, was the biggest event for me. I have said things before about OWCA before but thought I would mention it again.

Here is a little history. "HER PRESENCE IN COLOURS" exhibitions were founded and directed by the guiding vision of Dr. Yuen Chee Ling of Malaysia. Dr. Ling believes that, “The artworks of these exhibitions reflect a cohesive spirit of the women artists and their visions for peace and harmony which will surely contribute towards building a better tomorrow for our future generations.” This exhibition marks the 17th anniversary of HER PRESENCE IN COLOURS, a series that began in 1993 in Beijing. At that time, seven women artist participated. This year, 90 women artists from 24 countries participated in the 9th exhibition. Previous shows were staged in Thailand, England, Canada, Australia, South Korea, and China. This was the first in the USA. There were 93 women artists of various nationalities who presented their works together at the Littman. Among the 93, 69 were from countries foreign. The theme was, "Reflection on Oneself: Self-portrait" The art works were either literal self-portraits, or one reflecting the individual's feelings and ideas.

Three other highlights of the summer were presentations of my work at four Portland-area venues:
The Poster Garden "1st Thursday in the Pearl," a monthly art event in Portland's Pearl District where. I had one large wall for my creations.

Six Street Gallery "Fiber Arts Festival" in Vancouver, WA (just across the river) where three of my pieces were juried into this show.
The Albina Bank Exhibition, also in Portland's Pearl District, and held in conjunction with OWCA show, where two of my pieces were juried in.

SAQA Oregon Members Contribute to the SAQA Benefit Auction

Over 280 pieces have been donated to the 2010 SAQA Benefit Auction. The funds raised through the Auction are critical to supporting SAQA's exhibitions, catalogs and outreach programs. SAQA's Benefit Auction is its biggest fundraiser. Last year donations from 235 members raised $47,325!!!

This year's Auction will begin on Monday, September 20th at 2:00 Eastern. Price points will again be: $750, $550, $350, $250, $150 and $75. Unsold work will be placed on the SAQA website for a month and then returned to the artist.To see all of the quilts, go to the SAQA website.

Ila McCallum had two quilts accepted into the LaConner Quilt & Textile Museum Quilt Fest 2010 which features The Applique Society. The quilts are Small Flowers (Artist’s Way Quilt), 19w x 12h, shown below, and Geranium, 48w x 40h, above. Suzy Bates' quilt What's Next? will also be part of the applique show.The show runs October 1, 2, & 3, 2010.

The two quilts below are on display September 1 through October 15 as part of the LaConner Quilt Walk. These quilts are part of the Guatemala Bound project being headed by Bonnie Bucknam. Bonnie and friends are making quilts for children in an orphanage near Solola, Guatemala. These two quilts are for sale, with proceeds dedicated toward cost of shipping the quilts to the orphanage.

Kathie Kerler was awarded first place in the Evolutions Exhibition at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum for her piece "At the Ocean's Edge." The exhibition asked that fiber artists expand upon the concept of a quilt to create something new in idea, method, or device. Kathie's quilt features a dimensional technique which uses strips of fabric sewn in a figure-eight that is flattened into mobius trefoils of triangular shapes. Paula Benjaminson (SAQA Oregon/Canada) will be teaching a Stampin’ Safari workshop at Fibers in Motion in Portland on Saturday, August 14, 2010 from 10 to 5. In the workshop, Paula teaches printing with hand-carved wooden blocks from Oshiwa Designs in Namibia, Paula’s former home in Africa. She'll cover everything from choosing fabric paint, tackling different surface design techniques for preparing backgrounds, embossing velvet, and foiling with the blocks. Karen Miller has been invited to exhibit this winter at the quilt museum in Paducah, an exhibit with the theme of Rivers. Her salmon quilt, Heading Home, will be part of the exhibit.
She has also been asked to exhibit in Westchester County NY at the Osilas Gallery at Concordia College, Bronxville, New York. The show, Sew New: Contemporary Quilt Artists, will run from November 4 - December 11, 2010, with an opening and curator's talk on November 4th. They hope to add other related events as the show gets fleshed out. This group show will include 25 - 30 works.

Karen is also scheduled for a solo show at the Latimer museum next spring. Details will be posted as they develop.

Five Oregon SAQA members will have work in the exhibit "Food, Field and Fiber" at Lane Community College in Eugene. The exhibit will run from September 20th through January 10th, 2011, in the David Joyce Gallery on the LCC campus.

Bird's Eye View, a exhibit by High Fiber Diet, features the work of several SAQA Oregon members: Terry Grant, Mary Arnold, Chris Brown, Bonnie Bucknam, Gerrie Congdon, Shirley MacGregor, Karen Miller, Deanna Robinson, and Laura Jaszkowski. Portland Area SAQA Meeting at The Pine Needle

The June 9 Portland area SAQA meeting was attended by 13 people, including 1 student member and 1 non member. We got acquainted and discussed what we would like to gain from ongoing meetings. We agreed to next meet on September 8 at 1pm-3pm at The Pine Needle in Lake Oswego. Each member should bring a piece of their work to show and discuss.

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is showcasing the talent of 85 professional, amateur and aspiring artists from Trinity and the greater community in the exhibit Artists Among Us. SAQA Oregon Members to Exhibit in Australia

Gerrie Congdon and Terry Grant will both have work shown at the Australasian Quilt Convention and Textile Art Festival in Brisbane, Australia, June 25-27, 2010 as part of a special showing of the Twelve by Twelve Collaborative Art Quilt Project.

The project was a two-year, international project involving twelve quilt artists from around the world. Each artist completed a total of twelve quilts, measuring 12" x 12" interpreting twelve different themes. A book about the project will be published by Lark Publishing in Spring of 2011.
